Basic parts of a digital camera.

Updated: Aug 12, 2023

After getting to know the three basic settings of a camera, one should start getting to know the camera itself; its parts and where everything is located. This article will talk about the basic common parts of a camera and will also talk about my own camera which is a bit different. Let's start.

1. The Image Sensor

An Image sensor is what processes each pixel of a picture. The resolution of the image is decided by this specific single part.

2. Viewfinder

A viewfinder is a small scope that can be seen at the top of most digital cameras nowadays. It is located at the top of camera and is a way to look at the image about to be captured. It is a more immersive way to compose a shot.

3. Hotshoe

A hotshoe is a sort of railing on top of a camera that is used to attach accessories. Accessories like external flashes, microphones, and wireless camera photo triggers can be attached to this directly.

4. Memory card slot

The memory card slot of a camera is where the SD card is stored. An SD card is where the pictures that are clicked on the camera are stored. It is usually located on the bottom or at the side as a slider to open the compartment and store the card.

5. Battery

The bottom of the camera will also have a place to store the battery which the camera drains energy from in order to work.

6. Tripod

Most cameras will also contain a place for users to be able to mount a tripod. It will be located at the bottom of the camera.

7. Modes Dial

There is a dial located at the top of a camera which switches the camera into different modes according to what the user wants to use it for. It could be many modes - Manual, Auto, Programmed, Video, and more.

My Camera - The Canon SX160

My camera is very old. I think I mentioned it before on the "About" page that I found it in my parents' old house's storage room. That's how I got into photography. My Camera has many features as well. The modes on the modes dial - Aperture priority, Shutter speed priority, Standard video, Manual, Auto, Portrait, Fish-eye lens (which looks quite funny), and programmed. I have an inbuilt flash. I can control the ISO, the aperture, and the Shutter speed, all in manual mode, which is the mode I use most. My camera doesn't have a viewfinder, and I don't think I need it. It has communication ports, an SD card slot, and runs on non-rechargeable cells. I clicked most of the pictures displayed on my portfolio from this camera. Some are clicked from my iPhone. I like my camera quite a lot.

Thank you for checking out this article! Please look out for the next article coming out on the 14th of August, which goes deep into the history of photography.
